Watch Now: Members of R.E.M. and Guests Mark 40th Anniversary of ‘Chronic Town’ in Athens

Last night, members of R.E.M. and their guests took the stage at the 40 Watts Club in Athens, Ga., to mark the momentous 40th anniversary of their debut EP, Chronic Town. The evening featured the band’s original players Peter Buck and Mike Mills and an onslaught of talent, including Kevn Kinney, Lenny Kaye, Darius Rucker, Indigo Girls, Mitch Easter and many other notable musicians.
Comedian David Cross hosted the evening, and the house band was led by The Black Crowes’ co-founder Rich Robinson, who was joined on stage by bandmate Steve Pipien on bass and The Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin. Also present during the event was R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry, who did not perform.
During the night, the group of artists worked through the entirety of the Chronic Town tracking list, performing the EP from start to finish, beginning with the opening number “Wolves, Lower,” featuring two-time Tony Award-winning actor John Cameron Mitchell. To follow, comedian Fred Armisen took the stage and sang fan favorite, “Gardening at Night,” which was followed by “Carnival of Sorts (Boxcar)” featuring Quinn Robinson.
“10,000” brought Mitch Easter to the stage before the final song off R.E.M.’s debut release, “Stumble,” which saw a return by Mitchell. As the night continued, the featured artists began pulling in different numbers from across the band’s history, starting with Elf Power, who performed “Little America,” “Begin The Begin” and “There She Goes Again.”
The Pylon Re-Enacted delivered three additional numbers, including R.E.M.’s commonly covered “Crazy,” as well as “Crush With Eyeliner,” and a take on Mission of Burma’s “Academy Fight Song.” Additional high points included Drivin N Cryin’s Kinney singing “Fall On Me” and “King of Birds,” the Indigo Girls’ version of “Orange Crush,” and the Mills-led encore of Big Star’s “September Gurls.”
