On Wednesday night, American musician, singer and songwriter Kevin Morby delivered a dynamic and electric version of the title track of his latest project This Is a Photograph on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.

During the performance, Morby was backed by a trio of singers and a full band who assisted him in layering a quilt of sonic storytelling. Morby’s lyrics, which explore mortality and were inspired by an old photograph he found after his father collapsed in front of him, build slowly and are sewn together by guitar riffs, seraphic vocals, steady maraca and a mindful bassline. As the sonic cloth became more defined the musical elements boldly stepped forward in unison as Morby incanted, “This is what I’ll miss after I die/ And this is what I’ll miss about being alive.”

Following the release of This Is a Photograph Relix stated that “Morby has become a modern day master at exploring existential themes, but making them sound wholly relatable,” and this recent performance on Kimmel furthers that sentiment.

While on the show, Morby also recorded a web-exclusive rendition of his 2016 single “Beautiful Strangers,” which was created to benefit the gun control non-profit Everytown for Gun Safety, following a terrorist attack in Paris.

Morby is currently on a world tour in support of This is a Photograph which will make stops throughout Europe in the U.K. before returning to North America for a run of shows that kick off in Sonoma Calif. on Sept. 28 and will wrap in Vancouver on Nov. 12.
