Last night, CBS aired Homeward Bound: A Grammy Salute To Paul Simon, a two-hour television special that included a star-studded cast of musicians who took turns delivering some of Simon’s exemplary music catalog. Amongst the performers was Dave Matthews, who led the Graceland classic, “You Can Call Me Al.” Watch now.
The program was initially filmed at Los Angeles’ Pantages in April. The Woody Harrelson-hosted event featured a 17-piece house band helmed by Rickey Minor, formerly the Tonight Show bandleader. The event began with a take on “Kodachrome” by Brad Paisley. To follow, The Jones Brothers ripped “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” ahead of Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood’s haunting cover of “The Boxer.”
The night included Susanna Hoffs joining the house band for “A Hazy Shade of Winter.” Then Sting stepped out to take on Simon’s “America.” Next, Billy Porter reimagined “Loves Me Like a Rock,” while Trombone Shorty and Irma Thomas teamed up for the Big Easy-inspired “Take Me to Mardi Gras.”
Later on, Jimmy Cliff and Shaggy united for “Mother and Child Reunion.” Eventually, Simon appeared on stage, backing Rhiannon Gidden on “American Tune,” “Graceland,” and a final solo delivery of “The Sound of Silence.” Also included during the program, was Matthews stunning cover of fan favorite, “You Can Call Me Al,” which can be viewed below.
