On Monday, July 8, The Doobie Brothers brought their sprawling 50th Anniversary Tour to Jacksonville, Fla., and picked up some very special guests on the way to the stage. For the legendary yacht rockers’ staging Daily’s Place Amphitheater, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi joined in the celebration, giving some regional nuance from the Southern rock bastion that the Tedeschi Trucks Band calls home.

After opening with classics like “Rockin’ Down the Highway” and “Dependin’ on You,” the band reached a high-point in the middle of the stage when it welcomed Trucks to the stage for an extended sit-in. With the Jacksonville-bred guitar virtuoso and tour opener Robert Cray, the veteran outfit busted-out Sonny Boy Williamson’s “Don’t Start Me Talkin’,” an on-and-off staple of the band’s live experience since ’74, nearly five years since its last treatment at Nashville, Tenn.’s storied Ryman Auditorium in November 2019. Following this thrilling dust-off, Trucks remained onstage to support well-loved tracks “It Keeps You Runnin’” and “Eyes of Silver.”

With the sit-ins from Trucks and percussion from former Allman Brothers Band member Marc Quiñones–who is currently on tour with The Doobie Brothers–the evening suddenly shaped up to be a miniature Allman reunion in the band’s original stomping grounds. The family affair continued after The Doobie Brothers closed out the show with rendition of “China Grove,” when the band returned to the stage for three encore songs–“Black Water,” “Takin’ It to the Streets” and “Listen to the Music”–with Susan Tedeschi sitting in on the last song of the night alongside her husband and bandmate.

The Doobie Brothers will return to the stage tonight, July 10, for a show at West Palm Beach, Fla.’s iTHINK Financial Amphitheatre, followed by a July 11 performance at MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre in Tampa. For tickets and more information on The Doobie Brothers’ tour, go to
