Over the weekend, Slash kicked off his hotly anticipated S.E.R.P.E.N.T. Festival, which will bring an all-star celebration of the blue to 27 dates across the country through mid-August. After a high-energy inaugural showing at Bonner, Mont.’s KettleHouse Amphitheater on July 5–which included a tourmate team-up on “Shake Your Money Maker”–the renowned Guns N’ Roses guitarist took his traveling show to Airway Heights, Wash.’s Northern Quest Amphitheater for a July 6 follow-up. In this second show, the Warren Haynes Band proved yet again to be preeminent torchbearers of the musical tradition by punctuating an impressive set with “Soulshine,” featuring sit-ins from Slash and Myles Kennedy.
Following performances from Samatha Fish and Eric Gales, Haynes took the stage with his freshly reconfigured backing band, comprising longtime friend and collaborator John Medeski on keys, New Orleans’ Terrence Higgins on the drums and Gov’t Mule bassist Kevin Scott. The band kicked off its deep-digging, bluesy set with the 2011 original “Man in Motion,” then blazed ahead through Gov’t Mule’s “Beautifully Broken” and “Thorazine Shuffle” and the Allman Brothers Band’s “Instrumental Illness.” As the set drew to a close, Haynes teed up his trademark original “Soulshine” for a grand finale, tapping fest founder Slash and singer-songwriter Kennedy for guitar solos and backing vocals. Watch a fan-recorded video of the fiery jam that unfolded below.
Slash’s S.E.R.P.E.N.T. Festival–an anagram for Solidarity, Engagement, Restore, Peace, Equality N’ Tolerance–will continue to bring fans together under the spirit of the blues tonight, July 8, with a staging at Marymoor Park in Redmond, Wash. The Warren Haynes Band will tag along for four further dates, closing out the tour’s West Coast run on July 14. For tickets and more information, visit serpentfestival.com.
