Umphrey’s McGee Honor Garth Hudson with “Up On Cripple Creek” in Virginia

Last Wednesday, Jan. 22, Umphrey’s McGee returned for the second show in a two-night residency in Charlottesville, Va. To close out their series at the Jefferson Theater, the beloved genre-bending sextet served up a triumphant two-set show lined with fan favorites and accented by rarities, including a tribute to The Band organist Garth Hudson, who passed away on Jan. 21.
Umphrey’s took the stage with a twist, opening with the second-ever treatment of “Restrung” and its first appearance since June 2021, 286 shows ago. This oddball intro sped directly into “Remind Me,” which was followed by familiar cuts “Wife Soup” and “Syncopated Strangers” and the more obscure “Roctopus.” After returning to the hist with “All Things Ninja,” the ensemble moved into the spirited twang of The Band’s “Up On Cripple Creek.” This treatment of the smash hit from 1969’s The Band was Umphrey’s 25th, and their first since April 2012, when it was delivered as a tribute following the passing of Levon Helm.
The band returned to the stage for the second set with the unforgettable “All in Time,” then followed this towering energy to rip through “Out of Order” and “The Silent Type.” Umphrey’s let their 19th cover of David Bowie’s “Fame” fly before closing out the set with a medley of “August” and the closing passage of “All in Time.” To cap off the performance, they sent out another segued pair of “Mail Package” and “Kimble.”
Umphrey’s McGee will return on Thursday, Jan. 30 for a one-off set at Sayreville, N.J.’s Starland Ballroom, then head to Port Chester, N.Y. for two nights at The Capitol Theatre on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. For tickets and more information on the band’s 2025 tour itinerary, visit umphreys.com/tour.
