Bob Weir made a surprise appearance with The Terrapin Family Band at Merlo Park, CA’s The Guild Theatre last. The Grateful Dead co-founder joined The Terrapin Family Band–who were formed as the house act at Phil Lesh’s Terrapin Crossroads–throughout their entire show. In addition to core members Ross James, Grahame Lesh, Jason Crosby and Alex Koford, The Terrapin Family Band’s announcement lineup also boasted frequent collaborator Eric Krasno. Peter Rowan was slated to serve as a special guest but was forced to cancel his appearance after testing positive for COVID. 

Weir emerged at the top of the show to lead the band through “Cassidy,” and he remained onstage for “Friend of the Devil,” “He’s Gone,” “Bird Song,” “Jack-a-Roe,” Jimmy Cliff’s “The Harder They Come,” “China Cat Sunflower” and “I Know You Rider.” After a short break, The Terrapin Family Band returned with Weir and Krasno for a second set that consisted of “Terrapin Station,” “Shakedown Street,” “Scarlet Begonias,” “Samson and Delilah,” “New Speedway Boogie,” “Standing on the Moon” and a “Not Fade Away” sequence that included Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.”

Nashville musician Molly Tuttle, who was raised in Northern California, sat in with the ensemble for “Stand on the Moon” through the end of the set. For an encore, Weir, Krasno and Tuttle returned to help Terrapin Family Band close the night with the sing-along “Ripple.”

Weir will appear on CBS Sunday Morning this weekend. The musician will discuss his recent performances with the National Symphony Orchestra. The segment is slated to feature a look at the shows’ rehearsals as well as the only “official” footage being released from those performances.
