Tame Impala Cover The Strokes’ “Last Nite” at Primavera Sound

Yesterday evening, Tame Impala performed their headlining set Primavera Sound at Parc del Fòrum, Barcelona, Spain. To fan’s elation, the Australian group performed tracks throughout their discography hitting songs from Currents, The Slow Rush, Lonerism and Innerspeaker; a major highlight came during their encore where they played their debut cover of The Strokes’ “Last Nite.”
Earlier that day Primavera Sound confirmed many fans’ fears: that The Strokes would have to pull out of their headlining set scheduled for June 3, due to COVID-19 as they did for Boston Calling five days earlier, and Tame Impala gave fans a small but deeply effective taste of what The Strokes have to offer. Before starting the song frontman Kevin Parker said, “Probably never again. Just for you guys, alright?” before the band broke into the unmistakable bassline from the 2001 track off Is This It.
“Due to the ongoing COVID situation in which we’ve had to cancel two shows already, we tried – but unfortunately need to cancel tomorrow night’s set at Primavera Sound,” The Strokes wrote on an Instagram story. “The band is committed to returning full force in Stolkholm and playing next weekend in Barcelona. We deeply apologize.”
Primavera Sound wrote a statement of their own, writing, “We have tried everything. We wanted The Strokes to be at Primavera Sound Barcelona this weekend but you can’t always get what you want.” They continued to share in the English translation of the statement, “Since we heard about the cancellation of the band’s concert in Boston on May 28, we have been in contact with the band to see how the festival could help make their concert happen. In fact, the band is already in Barcelona, with the exception of one of its members, who can’t travel due to health reasons.”
Primavera’s statement also went on to state that Caribou will be taking The Strokes’ place in the festival lineup tonight, and Mogwai will take Caribou’s original slot. Fans who bought a ticket for June 3 will be allowed to attend on June 10, when The Strokes are slated to return to the festival.
