Songwriters Hall of Fame Class of 2025 to Feature The Doobie Brothers, George Clinton and More
The 2025 list of honorees for the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame has been unveiled. This morning, January 22, CBS’ Senior Culture Correspondent Anthony Mason shared the chosen artists who will garner the distinguished title during the official induction ceremony and award gala, set to occur on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at New York’s Marriott Marquis Hotel.
“The Songwriters Hall of Fame celebrates and honors the contributions of our great popular music songwriters while developing new writing talent through workshops, showcases, scholarships, and digital initiatives,” including this year’s laureates: funk innovator George Clinton (Parliament-Funkadelic), Tom Johnston, Michael McDonald and Patrick Simmons of The Doobie Brothers and Mike Love from the Beach Boys.
Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, Tony Macaulay and Ashley Gorley round out this artist list for this year’s recipients of the coveted tunesmith status. Notably, for the first time since 2017, the Songwriters Hall of Fame induction list does not include a female artist despite previously showing efforts to highlight women songwriters like Sheryl Crow, Janet Jackson, Alanis Morissette, and others.
Of the aforementioned artists headed for induction, Love trails his Beach Boys bandmate, Brian Wilson, who received the honor in 2000.
Moreover, the Songwriters Hall of Fame rank arrives after the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame status for Love, who was inducted alongside the Beach Boys in 1988, Clinton (1997), and the aforementioned members of the Doobie Brothers (2020). P-Funk and the Beach Boys also received the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
