Sierra Hull Details Studio Project: ‘The Movements,’ A Three-Part Bluegrass Concerto

Decorated mandolinist, composer, and vocalist Sierra Hull has announced the forthcoming release of her bluegrass concerto, titled The Movements. Originally commissioned by the FreshGrass Institute ahead of their 2023 gathering, the three-movement piece presents Hull and her band: Avery Merritt, Erik Coveney, Mark Raudabaugh, and Shaun Richardson, delving into meticulous arrangements and improvisations that allow the five-piece to flex their ability to build off one another and fill instrumental pockets. A studio cut of the project will be available on Friday, April 10.

The three-piece collection was initially performed live during the 2023 edition of FreshGrass. Rather than enter the studio to track the new multi-part feature, the group maintained their packed touring itinerary and finished cutting Grammy-nominated A Tip Toe High before resuming the project at large. Notably, Hull and her band previously appeared on CBS Mornings’ Saturday Session to perform “Movement Three.” Watch below.

“Movement 3 has been a staple in our live shows over the last few years, occasionally sneaking in Movement 1 or Movement 2 when we were craving a challenge,” says Hull via press release. “Folks have been asking for a while now when we would finally release a recording of them, so we are pumped to finally share it with everyone! It’s truly a capture of the earliest days of this group of musicians learning to make music together.”

Hull joins the ranks of fellow musicians like Béla Fleck, Rhiannon Giddens, and Sarah Jarosz, who previously received FreshGrass’ commission status.
