On Jan. 15, Relix celebrated 50 years with an all-star concert at Brooklyn, N.Y.’s Brooklyn Bowl dubbed Taper’s Choice with Friends & Casual Acquaintances. In the enduring spirit of the magazine, the evening’s program reflected on the music that’s sustained Relix and its readership with the ethos that’s always set the jam community apart from the mainstream: across a jam-packed show, the LA-based supergroup of bassist Alex Bleeker, guitarist Dave Harrington, drummer Chris Tomson and keyboardist Zach Tenorio-Miller served up a heaping helping of collaboration, virtuosity, and shenanigans.
Wednesday’s program was further elevated by an unbelievable litany of high-profile sit-ins, with more than 11 special guests including Tom Constanten, Mike Gordon, Scott Metzger, Tom Hamilton, Mikaela Davis, Karina Rykman, Eric Slick and Jake Brownstein getting in on the fun. After three exhilarating hours, the full-company closer of the Jerry Garcia Band’s “Shining Star” capped off a fitting tribute to Relix’s legacy of music and a night to remember for the next 50 years.
