Last night, Feb. 22, Phish staged the second performance in its seventh annual Riviera Maya series. Following Wednesday’s welcome set, this was the band’s first full show in the series, and in 2024, composed of two sets and a total of 18 songs. Among the evening’s many highlights were a bust out of “Driver” and a quote from “Shipwreck,” the oddball selection from the band’s Halloween 2017 staging of Disney’s 1964 Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House novelty record performed in its entirety only twice.

Exploding onto the stage with the same wild energy that wrapped the previous show, Phish kicked off its first set with “First Tube,” the blazing, ascendant final track from 2000’s Farmhouse. The kaleidoscopic colors of this first jam ran through to “Free,” which the band followed with “Roggae” and 1998’s “Driver,” closing a 130-show gap since its previous presentation in July of 2021. The quartet continued with a medley of “My Soul” and “Gumbo,” into “Birds of a Feather” and finally “Axilla (Part II),” which featured the band’s 18th ever “Shipwreck” quote, to conclude the first set.

Phish returned for the second frame with the nautical homage of “A Song I Heard the Ocean Sing,” carrying on a context-referential theme marked in the welcome set, blended with “A Wave of Hope,” “Oblivion” and the endlessly iconic “Tweezer.” Next, the group staged a thrilling and ambitious total segue between the frantic 1990 live classic “Tube” and the same year’s “Runaway Jim,” ultimately returning to “Tube” to draw the second set to a close. The band then returned to the stage for a dynamic and cathartic encore, composed of “Bug” and the surprising “Tweezer Reprise,” bringing the show’s energy to one final peak with a song that similarly concluded the band’s Thursday Riviera Maya performance in 2022.
