Phil Lesh to Welcome Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and Nels Cline for PHILCO at Sacred Rose Festival’s Inaugural Event

Chicago’s highly anticipated Grateful Dead-inspired gathering, Sacred Rose Festival, has announced who will be joining Phil Lesh and Friends for their headlining act during their inaugural event. Lesh’s “friends” will be none other than Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and Nels Chine, who are set to perform as a supergroup under the perfect moniker, PHILCO.

The headling set will feature a backing band made up of Jeff Chimenti (Dead & Company). Stu Allen (Phil Lesh & Friends), Karl Denson (Rolling Stones), John Molo (Phil Lesh & Friends),  Elliott Peck (Midnight North), and Grahame Lesh (Phil Lesh & Friends). PHILCO will take to the main stage at Sacred Rose Festival on Friday, Aug. 26.

“Nels and I are honored to be asked to join Phil and Friends for Sacred Rose. There has been so much about Phil and the Dead to be inspired by over the years, from their longtime musical brotherhood to their wonderful and incomparable music, to their relentless touring and longevity,” said Tweedy in a statement. “But perhaps the biggest inspiration is their dedication to the community that has grown up around them. This is a trait that we in Wilco deeply appreciate and have aimed to emulate over the years. There’s nothing better than playing music with your friends, for your friends.”

The creation of PHILCO is not the first time Lesh and Wilco have collaborated. In 1999, Lesh and Wilco performed the Grateful Dead’s “Ripple” at Mountain Air Festival, and Cline has joined Lesh for his Phil Lesh and Friends performances at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, N.Y.

Sacred Rose Festival will take place at Chicagoland’s SeatGeek Stadium Campus from Aug. 26 through Aug. 28, and feature esteemed acts including Khruangbin, The War on Drugs, Black Pumas, Animal Collective, Umphrey’s McGee, The Disco Biscuits, Dawes and many more.
