Phil Lesh Opens 9-Show Halloween Run with The Q, Offering Expansive “The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys” Jam
Phil Lesh began his nine-show Halloween run on Oct. 11, reuniting his lineup of The Q – aka Warren Haynes, Jimmy Herring, John Molo and Rob Barraco.
This coalition of musicians performed with Lesh regularly from 2000 through 2003, yet the lapse in years didn’t show as the band sprung into action with an opening “Mason’s Children.”
“You know I missed you too, just as much,” a masked Lesh said the to elated crowd at the top of the show.
After “Doin’ That Rag,” the band really sunk their teeth into an expansive “The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys” which bled into (and then back out of) Miles Davis’ “So What.”
Set two was marked by a starting trio of Grateful Dead favorites: “Shakedown Street” (clocking in over 20 minutes), “Viola Lee Blues” and “New Speedway Boogie.”
Later, a “Cryptical Envelopment”> “Wharf Rat”> “The Other One” satisfied even the most persnickety of Grateful Dead die-hards, and the show ended with “I Know You Rider” and a “The Rad Thing” encore.
Phil Lesh & Friends’ Halloween celebration will continue on Oct. 12 and 13, as well as Oct. 18-20 and Oct. 29-31. The Q will close out their first run, followed by a rotating cast of “Friends” for number two – namely, Stuart Bogie, Amy Helm, Eric D. Johnson, Josh Kaufman, Grahame Lesh, Elliott Peck, Joe Russo and Benmont Tench.
The final Phil-O-Ween weekend will include Nicki Bluhm, Larry Campbell, Griffin Goldsmith, Taylor Goldsmith, Grahame Lesh, Trevor Menear, Lee Pardini, M.C. Taylor and Teresa Williams.
