New Orleans Music Community to Unite for Get Her Mojo Working: A Benefit for Jan Ramsey
On Oct. 2, the New Orleans music community will come together on their home turf for Get Her Mojo Working, a benefit honoring Jan Ramsey, founder of OffBeat Magazine. Ramsey was recently diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer; the forthcoming event will be a donation-based all-day concert series across two stages, featuring many talented local artists.
Ramsey began OffBeat nearly three decades ago “as an effort to improve and expand local music culture and business,” as stated on the publication’s official website. Since her career took flight in the early 1980s, she has generated a name for herself by publishing essays dubbed “Mojo Mouth.”
The single-day event will be held on two stages and features a packed schedule of performers. The first stage is presented by The Funky Uncle and will take place on an outside float. Music is set to begin at 12 p.m. local time on Oct. 2 with a tunes by Kermit Ruffins. The latter will be followed by Marc Stone, The Bucktown All-Stars, Boukou Groove, Jack Eckert & Friends, Russell Batiste & Friends, and lastly, Funky Uncle All-Stars featuring Leo Nocentelli.
Meanwhile, on the second stage at Tipitina’s, attendees can anticipate performances by John “Papa” Gros, Omari Neville & The Fuel, Mark Mullins & Friends, Walter Wolfman Washington & The Roadmasters, Jason Neville Funky Soul Band, Dirty Dozen Brass Band and the New Orleans Night Crawlers.
To offset the tremendous costs of treatment, Ramsey’s supporters have also put together a GoFundMe campaign, which will assist in the financial costs of medical treatment and the family’s living expenses during this time of difficulty.
