Morrison Hotel Gallery to Present Lynn Goldsmith Rock Photography Exhibition and Book Talk, ‘Patti Smith: Before Easter After’
Art liaison Lynn Goldsmith, agent of the lens behind various rock acts from the late 20th century, will extend the visual splendor of her narrative-style photography on Thursday, Nov. 7, at Morrison Hotel Gallery in New York City. The event will provide onlookers with the opportunity to view images from 1975-1980, considered her most fertile period as an artist. Coinciding with the art gathering, a book signing for Goldsmith’s Patti Smith: Before Easter After is also slated to occur.
Goldsmith is known for her contributions as a photographer, painter, film director, recording artist, and lyricist. She has also worked with various rock music stalwarts, including Tom Petty, Lou Reed, and Bob Dylan, as well as the event’s primary subject, Smith. During the Big Apple event, rock world admirers and attendees can view previously unseen Goldsmith images: an intimate look at Smith during her utmost evolving period.
Behind her lens, Goldsmith burned storied moments from her muse’s career, ranging from a 1977 accident when Smith fell from the stage and broke her neck to the commercial success and subsequent rise in fame that trailed the release of 1978’s Easter. The latter album featured Goldsmith’s capture of the punk rock luminary, setting forth the pair’s esteemed interplay of photographer and subject.
In addition to photos, the occasion will also boast never-before-seen oil paintings by Goldsmith. These paintings involve the photographer’s use of her own Smith photos, fixed to canvas and transformed through the application of oil and oil sticks. The mixed-media pieces will be for sale during the exhibition. The impending event celebrates Goldsmith’s multifaceted title as an artist while leaning into the music realm.
Goldsmith’s book, Patti Smith: Before Easter After, can be ordered here.
