Mickey Hart, Charles Lloyd, Edgar Meyer and More to Honor Late Tabla Master Zakir Hussain at Carnegie Hall
On Friday, March 6, 2026, Zakir Hussain, the renowned tabla virtuoso and percussionist who helped widen global interest in classical Indian music, will be celebrated by an esteemed list of collaborators and friends on the Ronald O. Perelman Stage in Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium in New York City. The event coincides with the late musician’s 75th birthday.
Zakir Hussain Eternal – A 75th Birthday Celebration of Rhythm, Genius and Joy is intended to bring together an extensive roster of performers who will deliver songs that honor Hussain’s life, his enduring legacy, and international reputation. During the imminent night of music, live performances will come from Mickey Hart, Charles Lloyd, Edgar Meyer, Vijay Iyer, V. Selvaganesh, Eric Harland, Fazal Qureshi, Taufiq Qureshi, Gerald Clayton, Harish Raghavan, Jayanthi Kumaresh, Kala Ramnath, Marcus Gilmore, Marvin Sewell, with special guests and students of the late great also expected.
Hart, Hussain’s longtime musical accomplice [Planet Drum], provided a brief account of what attendees can expect, writing on social media: “Through performances spanning classical Indian music, jazz, and contemporary world music, this concert reflects the timeless influence and boundless imagination that defined Hussain’s remarkable journey.”
Hussain’s six-decade tenure in the spotlight culminated in multiple Grammy Awards and India’s highest civil honor for his contributions to music. His virtuoso talent remains highly regarded across generations, rooted in the classical influences of home. He is credited as a founder and collaborator with ensembles such as Shakti and Planet Drum.
The forthcoming event will be the first time Mickey Hart has performed live since the passing of his longtime bandmate, Bobby Weir.
