The War on Drugs have shared a preview off I Don’t Live Here Anymore, the deluxe edition of the band’s 2021 double album, which is slated to be released on Friday, Sept. 30, via Atlantic. Today, the group presented fans with two tracks, “Ocean of Darkness” and “Slow Ghost,” in anticipation of this week’s drop.
The forthcoming set includes The War On Drugs’ critically acclaimed music on heavyweight 180-gram vinyl, in addition to a 7” single with previously unreleased tracks, “Oceans of Darkness” and “Slow Ghost,” which have worked their way into the band’s live catalog as of late.
The group shared comments on the new tracks via their official Instagram account, unveiling the back story behind the tracking of “Ocean of Darkness.” They wrote: “One night in LA, while we were many months into working on what would be I Don’t Live Here Anymore, Dave [Hartley] uncovered a stripped-down demo in my dropbox called ‘Oceans of Darkness,’ and insisted we try recording it.”
They continued, “We were frustrated and exhausted at the time, but we set up in a circle after dinner and worked it out as the tape was rolling. It’s rare that a song of ours could feel this complete after only a few takes, but it had all the desperation and urgency that we had been looking for. Ultimately I didn’t include it on the record because I couldn’t find a home for it among the other songs. We’re happy we can share it with you now.”
