Listen: John Butler Previews New Album with Lead Single “Trippin On You”

After a year of searching, John Butler has found his voice again. Yesterday, April 8, the Australian-American singer, songwriter and instrumentalist returned with “Trippin On You,” a fresh and energetic new single that arrives as a landmark development in his three-decade career. It’s a preview of things to come in the still-unannounced third chapter of the Four Seasons, a creatively re-centering four-record cycle that brought the healing ambient project Running River and powerful instrumental collection Still Searching in 2024. This next phase will be the first to feature his vocals.
“Trippin On You” is a thrilling advance offering that thrives with Butler’s signature style of contemplative and lighthearted storytelling. Over a sweet and infectious blues-tinted pop arrangement, he shares the fruit of his year of self-reflection with an inspired meditation on how joy is built up.
“This song is about relationships, work and internal narratives,” Butler explained in a statement. “I’m struck that ALL good things in my life need work to maintain their goodness. Mental health, marriage, business relationships, a garden, a clean room, trust and reliability etc. They all need us to turn up. They all deserve our best selves.”
Though he recorded the readymade song-of-the-summer alone with co-producer James Ireland in Fremantle, Australia, he’ll be joined on a sprawling summer tour–featuring shows with Dispatch, G. Love & Special Sauce, Donavon Frankenreiter and Illiterate Light–by the newly reformed John Butler Trio; his new backing band comprises original drummer Michael Barker, percussionist Michael Boase and bassist and keyboardist Ian Peres.
