Listen: Grace Slick Releases “Lahaina Shine” to Benefit Maui Wildfire Victims

Woodstock royalty Grace Slick has released a song to benefit victims of the Maui wildfires. The fires devastated part of the island, claiming 100 lives and leaving nearly 6,300 people without a home. With the story vanishing from headlines and folks still in need, Slick tapped California songwriter Michelle Mangione to co-write the new number, “Lahaina Shine.” Listen below.

“Lahaina Shine” cascades with a chorus of 1,000 ukulele-strapped singers who gathered back in November to aid the efforts by coming together in Long Beach, Calif. The song is available for download on PlayItForward.com, a site where musicians can support non-profit missions and organizations by selling their music for charitable donations.

Touching on the intent behind the number, Slick, a prominent figure on the San Francisco psychedelic music scene and member of Jefferson Airplane, offered via a press release, “The headlines have faded, but Lahaina still needs donations in order to rebuild. We love this place and are committed to aiding in the effort to restore it.”

Mangione added, “We thank the volunteers who gathered together to make this new song and to the thousands of fans who have already downloaded it.” Notably, the number was first posted on the site two months ago, raising over $32,000, with the entirety of the funds raised going toward the Peoples Fund of Maui.
