Shout it from the rooftops: Dr. Dog are back with a fresh new single, aptly titled “Tell Your Friends.” This slick new track arrives as the second single from the group’s forthcoming 11th record Dr. Dog, set to release on July 19 via We Buy Gold Records as the band’s first full-length studio offering in six years. The nostalgic song teems with delicate piano work, scratchy beats, and, of course, the band’s signature five-part harmonies.
Alongside “Talk is Cheap,” which gave fans a first taste of Dr. Dog’s return in April, this latest single further-outlines a new creative era for the band. “Tell Your Friends” is the first song in the band’s history written by drummer Eric Slick, who issued the rip-roaring solo record New Age Rage to widespread acclaim last month. “I immediately loved the beautiful simplicity of it,” recalls lead guitarist Scott McMicken on the contribution from his longtime bandmate. “Eric ended up playing guitar instead of drums, and we decided to present it in a very minimalistic way that seemed to fit with something so catchy and timeless.”
Dr. Dog’s long-awaited return comes from a bold re-imagining of its collaborative process, steering into eclectic and multifaceted workflow encouraging uninhibited expression from all members of the sextet. To this end, the band ventured to a secluded Pennsylvania cabin and recorded live to tape for a five-day sprint with “no rehearsal and no overdubs,” per McMicken. Together, Slick, McMicken, Toby Leaman, Frank McElroy and Zach Miller racked up nearly two dozen tracks with an emphasis on “creating something very soulful and live-feeling,” understanding that “the more you can let go of that fear of being imperfect, the more you open yourself up to deeper expression.” The album was mixed by Grammy-award winning producer Matt Ross-Spang and produced by McMicken, who works from behind the boards for the first time.
This summer, the newly re-invigorated and creatively synchronized Dr. Dog will show off its new era with a limited run of live engagements. The band is set to play at Philadelphia’s Mann Center for the Performing Arts with singer-songwriter Kevin Morby and peer group The Teeth on July 13, followed by a sold-out show with indie rock ensemble Fruit Bats at Morrison, Colo.’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre on July 18.
