Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Alex Koford has released his third original single, “When I Rise.” The follow-up to his initial solo entries, “A Fabled Lullaby” and “Alive Sacred Creatures,” the new number functions as Koford’s first self-produced, recorded and mixed single, and builds upon his already established sound in Dead adjacent projects, Grateful Shred and the Terrapin Family Band. 

Pulling from his listed influences, Koford references Fruit Bats, Sam Evian, Andy Shauf, Hiss Golden Messenger, Wilco and Paul McCartney as inspired acts behind the latest unveiling of his original music, which was tracked at his home studio in Los Angeles. A song that demands repeat listens, Korford presents lyrical reconciliation on past mistakes, which serve as acknowledgment and a commitment to push on. 

“I never really have a plan,” pondered Koford via press release. “Very rarely is it thought out of this is what I am trying to do. This song just happened.” Speaking to the raw outcome of the music, the musician tacked on the act of writing music “[is] mostly my coping mechanism.”

“This is what I love to do, and I’m trying to be better about releasing my new music,” he continued, touching on the intent of future deliverables. Koford closed out his comments, adding, “Music is a puzzle, and I thoroughly enjoy it.”

Apart from his solo work, Koford is currently on the road with Grateful Shred. The band will perform tonight, Friday, April 19, and tomorrow, Saturday, April 20, at Los Angeles’ Lodge Room. They will follow up on Sunday, April 21, at Belly Up in Solana Beach, Calif.
