Kim Gordon Gives “Bye Bye” Political Rework for 2025 with Bob Dylan-ish Video

Last year, Kim Gordon released her Grammy-nominated sophomore solo album, The Collective, and packed it with massive, grinding, beat-driven tracks like “BYE BYE.” On that lead single, the iconic former Sonic Youth vocalist, guitarist and bassist plods through an industrial hip-hop to-do list of numbing must-haves like “milk thistle,” “calcium,” “high-rise, “boot cut” and “Advil.” Now, she’s reworked it as “Bye Bye 25!,” shifting her cold gaze to the culture war.
“[Producer and collaborator] Justin Raisen had this idea to redo ‘Bye Bye’ starting at the end of the song,” Gordon detailed. “When I was thinking of lyric ideas it occurred to me to use words taken from a site that had all the words that Trump has essentially banned, meaning any grant or piece of a project or proposal for research that includes any of those words would be immediately disregarded or ‘canceled.’ I guess Trump does believe in cancel culture. Because he is literally trying to cancel culture.”
Some of the words Gordon pulled for “Bye Bye 25!” include “female,” “gay,” “climate change,” “victim,” “Hispanic,” “women,” “mental health” and “care.” It hits hard, especially when paired with the video co-directed by Gordon and Vice Cooler, which shows the singer flipping through cards like Bob Dylan in a particular music video. Proceeds from the track and its promo tee will go towards Noise for Now, the reproductive rights non-profit that’s previously joined with united acts like Faye Webster, David Byrne and DEVO for abortion access benefit compilations.
