David Crosby has announced a new album, titled For Free. The record is due out on July 23. The album follows Crosby’s 2018 offering Here If You Listen.

For Free sees Crosby worked with various collaborators, including Michael McDonald, Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen and Sarah Jarosz. In addition, the album features saxophonist Steve Tavaglione and drummer Steve DiStanislao, both of whom joined Crosby on his 2017 record Sky Trails. The record was produced by Crosby’s son, James Raymond.

“Can you imagine what it’s like to connect with your son and find out that he’s incredibly talented—a great composer, a great poet, and a really fine songwriter and musician all around?” Crosby said in a statement. “We’re such good friends and we work so well together, and we’ll each go to any length to create the highest-quality songs we can.”

The album’s title comes from the Joni Mitchell song of the same name, which Crosby covers on the record alongside Jarosz.

“Joni’s the greatest living singer-songwriter, and ‘For Free’ is one of her simplest,” Crosby noted. “[‘For Free’ is] one of my favorite songs because I love what it says about the spirit of music and what compels you to play.”

The cover art for the album is a portrait of Crosby painted for him by Joan Baez.
