Cat Power Celebrates 20 Years of ‘The Greatest’ with New ‘Redux’ EP and Anniversary Tour
Cat Power has announced her plans to celebrate the 20th anniversary of her landmark 2006 album, The Greatest, with a new three-song EP titled Redux. Set to release on Jan. 23 via Domino Recording Company, the upcoming set from the artist born Chan Marshall features two new covers and a fresh take on a standout from the album, all backed by Dirty Delta Blues, a supergroup assembled for the album’s initial tour. To preview the project, she’s released her treatment of James Brown’s classic “Try Me.”
Redux reunited Marshall with the backing quartet that brought her unforgettable seventh studio album to life on the road, translating its lush Memphis soul backing into rock arrangements. With longtime collaborator and The Greatest producer Stuart Sikes, Marshall rallied guitarist Judah Bauer (The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion), keyboardist Gregg Foreman (The Delta 72, Jesse Malin), bassist Erik Paparozzi (Lizard Music) and drummer Jim White (Dirty Three, Hard Quartet) for sessions at Austin’s Church House Studios.
Alongside “Try Me,” which Marshall recorded for the album’s sessions and scrapped to make her first record of exclusively original songs, the band revived their stripped-back arrangement of “Could We” from the 2006 world tour. A cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” was cut in tribute to the legendary guitarist and songwriter Mabon “Teenie” Hodges, who contributed to The Greatest and with whom Marshall had a close bond before his passing in 2014.
Cat Power will also celebrate The Greatest with a sprawling anniversary tour; she’ll perform the album in full at 23 North American shows from Feb. 12 to March 14 and across a 25-stop Europe tour. Tickets for all dates will go on sale this Friday, Nov. 7, at 10 a.m. local time.
Redux is available to pre-order and pre-save now.
