Deemed the bluegrass golden boy, Billy Strings shed his assumed musical approach over the weekend. The artist known for his traditional stylings traded his acoustic guitar for an electric axe while sitting in with Flesh and Blood Robot at The Pyramid Scheme in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Sunday, March 17. The concert represented the group’s first in 18 years.

Notably, the night was a full-fledged celebration of Michigan metal, with a bill that extended to include other acts, such as Heartsick, See You Next Tuesday, From a Second Story Window and more, which, according to the musician, who followed up with a post via social media, “was a straight-up heavy metal reunion and a flashback to the mid 00’s.”

Stings continued his social post, adding, “Sweaty and poignant. I want to thank @fleshandbloodrobotmetal for asking me to be a part of this show. I have loved this band since I was like 12 and to see them play after 18 years was just incredible, especially from where I was standing. They never skipped a beat. These fellas were my first ‘big brothers’ in a band who I really looked up to.. and who I saw and thought ‘I could do that someday’….. my neck hurts. But it was soo worth it.”

Strings added a secondary post that touched on his music history, specifically his To Once Darken Skies history. The artist dropped a series of photos alongside the caption, “Still a scene kid at heart.” Previously, Strings has hit on his roots, sharing the stage with Tool on Jan. 23, 2024, in Nashville, and before that, a 2023 guest slot with the prog-metal ensemble.
