On June 7 and 8, Big Head Todd and the Monsters returned to Morrison, Colo.’s hallowed Red Rocks Amphitheatre for a long-awaited engagement in their Centennial State backyard. Just shy of Red Rocks’ 40th anniversary, the band pored over their four-decade discography and welcomed some top-tier special guests for two unforgettable experiences.
Cheap Trick and Cracker opened the June 7 show, setting the energy for the rest of the concert. Big Head Todd and the Monsters then took the stage and performed 23 songs, including heavy hitters like “Bittersweet” and “Broken Hearted Savior” off their 1993 album Sister Sweetly. They also whipped out songs from their most recent album, Her Way Out, including “Thunderbird” and “Into The Light.”
It just wouldn’t be a proper review of the band’s catalog if Big Head Todd and the Monsters hadn’t made sure to perform their beloved renditions of “Brandy” by Looking Glass, “Boom Boom,” by John Lee Hooker and “Tangerine” by Led Zeppelin. The first evening’s encore featured special guest Hazel Miller, a long-time collaborator of the band. She lent her vocals to a soul-stirring rendition of “It’s Alright,” “Sister Sweetly” and a raucous cover of AC/DC’s “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.”
Night two began with Bill Murray and His Blood Brothers, just off the heels of their last performance at Brooklyn, N.Y.’s Brooklyn Bowl. Following their performance, Big Head Todd and the Monsters flexed their extensive discography by incorporating tracks like “Bittersweet” and “The Leaving Song” from their 1990 album, Midnight Radio, “Stratagem” from their 1994 album of the same name and more tracks extending throughout the decades.
For the encore, Hazel Miller made another appearance for “Beautiful World” and “If You Can’t Slow Down.” This led to the last song of the night, which featured a guest appearance from Warren Haynes. Haynes joined the band in covering Lynyrd Skynyrd’s 1974 hit song, “Free Bird,” signaling the end of the event and the delivery of a classic cover.
Big Head Todd and the Monsters will return to the stage on Friday, June 13, for a performance at Jackson, Wyo.’s Snow King Mountain. For tickets and more information on the band’s full live calendar, visit bigheadtodd.com/tour.
