Back in mid-December, Alabama Shakes reunited on stage for the first time since 2017. The initial performance was billed as a solo stand featuring the group’s front person and Relix cover artist, Brittany Howard, during the Tuscaloosa Get Up 3 Benefit Concert at the Bama Theatre in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The occasion provided the first shred of momentum and hope for a return after a seven-year performance gap.
During last month’s gig, Howard performed a solo take on her Jaime contribution, “Short and Sweet,” evoking a bit of wordplay between the song title and her ensuing action, claiming to have forgotten her electric guitar in a swift move that allowed her to leave the stage. The fake out provided an opportune moment to hop off stage and transition the night into a fully-fledged reunion–even the night’s video backdrop changed from Brittany Howard to Alabama Shakes, beckoning Howard, bassist Zac Cockrell, and Heath Fogg to the stage.
Reunited with her Alabama Shakes bandmates, Howard told the crowd, “If there’s one place we’re gonna get back together, it’s gonna be Tuscaloosa.” Her words preluded a walk down memory lane, involving 2012’s Boys & Girls (“Be Mine,” “Hang Loose,” “Hold On,” “I Ain’t the Same”), 2015’s Sound & Color (“Gimme All Your Love,” “Joe,” “Shoegaze,” “This Feeling”), and their Silver Lining Playbook’s contribution, “Always Alright.”
The band stayed hushed through the holidays and the start of the New Year, only to break the silence today, sharing a series of studio photos on the Alabama Shakes’ Instagram page, capturing Howard back beside Cockrell, Fogg, and Canadian music producer Shawn Everett, a longtime accomplice of the award-winning band. See below.
Hours after the band teased a series of studio photos, Howard, Cockrell and Fogg shared a photo arm-in-arm with the caption, “See you at @mnyachtclub!” The post officially confirmed the band’s return and initial billed performance on Friday, July 18, 2025, as headliners beside Hozier.
