MassMoca’s FreshGrass Musical Festival Drops Preliminary Artist Lineup

FreshGrass Music Festival has announced a preliminary artist lineup for their 2023 event, which will take place on Sept. 22 through 24 at The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) in North Adams, Mass. This year’s bill will bring together a number of esteemed bluegrass and roots musicians for three days of live music across the museum’s 16-acre campus. Headlining acts will include the Drop Kick Murphy’s (Acoustic), who will play songs from their two albums with the lyrics of Woody Guthrie, as well as Lucas Nelson and Promise of the Real. 

Other top-billing artists on the roster include singer-songwriter, Sierra Ferrell, Carolina Chocolate Drops frontwoman Rhiannon Giddens, Americana outfit The Devil Makes Three, Aoife O’Donovan, Allison Russel, Mighty Poplar ft. Noam Pikelny, Andrew Marlin, Chris Eldrige & Greg Garrison, Alison Brown, Bombino, and AJ Lee & Blue Summit are also slated to take the stage.

Additional acts are expected from The Sam Grisman Project playing the music of Gracia/Grisman–as well as Buffalo Nichols, Sunny War, Son Rompe Pera, Arkansauce and Michael Davis. More artists are set to be announced in the months leading up to the event. In addition to the music, FreshGrass Music Festival will present a wide range of interactive arts programming. ​​FreshScores, a silent film with original live music, will be on view. Attendees can also enjoy industry and instrument workshops, pop-up performances, and an on-site vinyl shop from Compass Records. Ticket-holders can camp within walking distance of the festivities at the designated FreshGround tent-camping site.
