Bob Weir Welcomes Chris Robinson and Jackie Greene, Sits In with Slightly Stoopid at BeachLife Festival

The inaugural BeachLife Festival kicked off on Friday in Redondo Beach, CA, with sets from Slightly Stoopid, As the Crow Flies, Bruce Hornsby, Roots of Creation and more, including a headlining set from Bob Weir & Wolf Bros that featured a couple of special guests during the encore.

The trio of Weir, Don Was and Jay Lane wrapped up the evening on the main stage with a set of Grateful Dead favorites like “Jack Straw,” “Cassidy,” “The Other One” and “The Music Never Stopped,” plus a couple of tunes from Weir’s RatDog days, “Two Djinn” and “Easy Answers,” Weir’s solo cut “Only a River” and a cover of “Me and Bobby McGee.” Two close out the set, Weir and company welcomed out Chris Robinson and guitarist Jackie Greene for “Not Fade Away.” Weir, Robinson and Greene have performed together in a trio setting in the past.

Prior to his Wolf Bros set, Weir was over on another stage with Slightly Stoopid during their set, when the Grateful Dead guitarist joined his Southern California friends for the Dead classic “Franklin’s Tower” and a cover of Tom Petty’s “You Don’t Know How It Feels.” Weir has collaborated with the band in the past including a couple of performances at his TRI Studios.

Earlier in the evening, Robinson presented an altered lineup for his As the Crow Flies project. Just a few days after announcing a hiatus for his Chris Robinson Brotherhood (along with the departure of keyboardist Adam MacDougall, who also usually plays in As the Crow Flies but was not present for their BeachLife set), Robinson played with regular ATCF members Tony Leone and Andy Hess plus Greene (a former member of Robinson’s The Black Crowes, along with MacDougall), keyboardist Joel Robinow and Blackberry Smoke collaborator and guitarist Benji Shanks, who also worked with the Crowes. (Regular ATCF guitarists Marcus King and Audley Freed had other commitments during BeachLife.)
