Grammy-nominated ensemble Southern Avenue has exclusively shared its latest single with Relix Magazine. Titled “Found A Friend In You,” the track originates from the Memphis-based band’s forthcoming Alligator Records debut, slated for release next calendar year. Today’s deliverable dips into the group’s signature whisk of roots, blues, and soul stylings, with added help from guest bassist Luther Dickinson (The North Mississippi Allstars), solidifying the intended takeaway of Southern kinship.

“Found A Friend In You, lingers on the idea of family, an effect caused by lengthy commitments to touring and consistent work as an act. In doing so, the group transforms their on and off-stage experiences into appreciation toward one another, as captured in lines that support mutual affinity and respect while actively maintaining the individuality of each player: “We found our strength there in each other/ And as long as we’re together, can’t nobody touch us.”

As an added effect, the single “Found A Friend In You” leans into the spirit of Memphis, where it and the entire record took shape. Maintaining a timelessness and soul-laden delivery not unlike The Staple Singers, Southern Avenue inquisitively draws on a similar uplifting presentation to Pop Staples’ idea of a family band. Tracked at the historic Royal Studios (Al Green, Ann Peebles), the troupe enlisted the help of Grammy-winner John Burk (Ray Charles, Melissa Etheridge). The set was recorded and mixed by decorated producer and engineer Boo Mitchell.

Hitting on the intent of the single “Found A Friend In You,” co-writer and the band’s frontwoman commented, “This song is an anthem of our friendship and shared experiences. It’s about the joy and the strength we’ve found in each other, and how that bond has made us who we are today. The gospel harmonies and the energy of the track reflect our roots and our journey together.”

The other half of the song’s crafter, guitarist Ori Naftaly, offered, “It’s a song that celebrates the power of friendship, the joy of making music together, and the sense of belonging that comes from being part of something greater. It’s a reflection of the highs and lows, the challenges we’ve faced, and the unbreakable bond we’ve formed. The song is not just about friendship. It’s an anthem of the connection that makes Southern Avenue more than just a band—it makes us a true family.”

In addition to the exclusive unveiling of new music, Southern Avenue is preparing to participate in a two-week outing as part of Willie Nelson’s Outlaw Music Festival Tour, including Bob Dylan, John Mellencamp, and more. The band will also appear at the 2024 edition of Farm Aid and a series of headlining stands and festival appearances before the release of their next studio album.
