Watch: Foo Fighters Rick Roll Westboro Baptist Church, Dave Grohl Explains

Foo Fighters are at it again, this time doing battle with Westboro Baptist Church outside of their show at Kansas City’s Sprint Center. The two have a history together, as the WBC situated itself outside of the venue in 2011, protesting the group’s gig in Missouri. That time, the band donned costumes and took to a flatbed truck, performing an impromptu show.

This time around, they didn’t have time to plan as elaborate a stunt, but did take some time to interrupt the hate-filled messages from the church as they used Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” to drown out the protests. Drummer Taylor Hawkins held a sign that said “You Got Rick Roll’d” while Dave Grohl, Pat Smear and Rami Jaffe all danced along in the back of a pickup truck. Naturally, fans flocked to the truck to take video, which you can watch below.

Later on at the show, Grohl explained the reasoning for the stunt prior to “My Hero,” saying, “We figured, you know what, why don’t we just fucking Rick Roll their ass? Cause nothing says love like a little Rick Astley in your life, you know what I’m saying? Never gonna give his ass up!”

He added, “I’m going to dedicate this song [‘My Hero’] to all the people who go out and speak their mind, to stand up for what they think is right, because every time we got to stand up in this city in front of them, we do it because we feel like we’re standing up for what we think is right.”
