Watch Eddie Vedder’s Emotional Dedication to Gord Downie at Wrigley Field

October 18, 2017

Yesterday, Tragically Hip frontman Gord Downie passed away at the age of 53 after a long battle with brain cancer. Downie retired from music in August of 2016, playing his final show on the same night that Pearl Jam took to the stage at Wrigley Field.

From the stage in Chicago, Eddie Vedder dedicated a performance of “Light Years” to Downie after wishing him well. “There’s something going on up north of the border tonight,” Vedder told the Wrigley crowd. “It involves somebody that we consider a family member just because he’s part of the group of touring musicians we’ve met over the years.”

Vedder finished the speech by wishing Downie the best. “I just want to send them energy from our gathering up to their gathering and wish the best to Mr. Gord Downie. We love you.”
