Watch Vampire Weekend Debut a Cover of Paul Simon’s “Late in the Evening” in London

Vampire Weekend are officially back, with a new album, Father of the Bride, due out May 3 and a full summer of shows on their schedule. The band recently traveled to London for some warm-up concerts before they hit the festival circuit this spring and ended up treating fans to some choice covers at a daytime show at Islington Assembly Hall.
VW’s set kicked off with two tracks from their 2013 release, Modern Vampires of the City, “Obvious Bicycle” and “Unbelievers,” followed by older tune “Holiday” and new-album cut “Sunflower.” They also fit new tracks “2021,” “Big Blue” and “Harmony Hall” into the performance, along with favorites like “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” and “Oxford Comma.”
The set also featured a run of three covers, starting with a rendition of “Late in the Evening” by the band’s longtime influence Paul Simon that featured an extended instrumental jam at the beginning, marking the first time Vampire Weekend had ever played the tune in a show. The group then followed that up with Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m Going Down” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Everywhere,” which they hadn’t played in just over a decade.
See the band’s setlist below, along with video of the Simon cover. Vampire Weekend will head to Alabama’s Hangout Festival in May before returning to the UK for the Big Weekend festival and then kicking off their North American headlining tour in Toronto on June 5. See their full schedule here.
