This past weekend, Brandi Carlile set fire to the Grammys with her full-band performance of “The Joke,” and the singer-songwriter followed up that much-hyped showing with an appearance on Ellen this week, delivering an acoustic—but equally goosebump-inducing—rendition of the single.

Listening to either performance makes it pretty clear why Carlile also took home multiple awards on Grammy night—Best Americana Album for By the Way, I Forgive You and Best American Roots Song and Best American Roots Performance for “The Joke.” The singer’s voice, even when accompanied by just her acoustic guitar (if not especially in that setting) is just staggering.
