There’s a New ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Trailer, and the Freddie Mercury Biopic Just Keeps Looking Better

There was a time when the upcoming Queen/Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody looked like one of the many doomed attempts to honor a legendary artist on the big screen—specifically, around the time that Sacha Baron Cohen dropped out after working on the project for years, citing his disagreement with the band that the movie’s story should be all about Mercury life and not about the group’s efforts after his death. But with the brand new trailer for the finally complete film dropping today, it seems the notion that Baron Cohen’s worst fears might be realized can be safely put to rest.

As with the shorter, teaser trailer that got us very excited about the movie earlier this year, this new trailer gives a number of glimpses at the various incarnations of Mercury that lead actor Rami Malek portrays in the film, and they all seem fantastic. Admittedly, the trailers’ creators have a number of ace-in-the-hole songs from the Queen catalog that are perfect for trailers in general and really amp up the energy in this one, but the underlying material seems to live up to the hype that the music creates.

While the first trailer gave a bit of background on the in-studio creation of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the new one contains a clip of guitarist Brian May introducing Mercury to the idea for the iconic “We Will Rock You” beat, plus more silly/genius moments from the sessions that created the movie’s namesake track. There’s also a scene where Malek’s Mercury, after a near-blowout fight with bandmate Roger Taylor, coyly drops the line, “Roger, there’s only room in this band for one hysterical queen.” There’s also a lot of heart here, with quick, touching lines in the trailer like Mercury saying, “What if I don’t have time?” and “We’re all legends,” both presumably from later in his life when he was battling sickness due to AIDS, which would finally take his life in 1991.

Do yourself a favor and check out the trailer, and if you’re as pumped for the movie as I am, do yourself another favor and mark your calendars for November 2.
