For those of you suffering any post-election day blues, we’ve doubled up today with a second song premiere…
The Candles will return with a new studio album, Matter + Spirit, set for digital release November 11 via The End Records, with CDs available December 16 (pre-order is now available via Amazon). Josh Lattanzi (Norah Jones, The Lemonheads, Albert Hammond, Jr.) formed the project back in 2009 and the group also features Jason Roberts (guitar), Pete Remm (keyboards) and drummer Greg Wieczorek. The Candles recorded Matter + Spirit at Brooklyn’s Degraw Sound with producer Ben Rice.
The record includes guest turns by such players as Norah Jones, who sings on “Move Along,” and photographer Danny Clinch who lends his harmonica to “Back to the City,” the song we premiere today. Lattanzi reflects, “The story behind this song lies somewhere between anticipating the return home after a long tour and questioning where your home really is. I wanted to make a recording that didn’t have any electric instruments and although that seemed limiting in some ways going in, it actually ended up creating a lot more space to let certain details shine through. In the end it’s just a three chord foot stomper. And there’s plenty of foot stomping on there.”
The Candles are currently on tour with Norah Jones (in Europe and then the U.S). Their upcoming dates appear below the premiere.
