Song Premiere: Robert Walter’s 20th Congress “Nerva & Dumbo”
Organ maestro
Robert Walter will release a new record with his 20th Congress, Spacesuit, on September 21 via Royal Potato Family. Taking inspiration from science fiction and space exploration—including the 2013 documentary Jodorowsky’s Dune about a movie that was never made—the album sees Walter and company taking his signature soul and funk-infused improvisation to atmospheric heights. Today, we premiere the second single from the effort, “Nerva and Dumbo.”
“‘Nerva and Dumbo’ was one of the first songs written for ‘Spacesuit,'” Walter tells Relix. “The title refers to NASA’s experimental thermonuclear rocket program. I wanted to place this early on the album because it’s a good example of us starting with a relatively conventional piece and really stretching the improvisation. Hopefully, this makes the listener feel as though they aren’t sure what could happen next. It’s a nice way challenge expectations and set the scene for the rest of the record.”
Along with Walter, the 20th Congress iteration featured on Spacesuit includes drummer Simon Lott, bassist Victor Little and guitarist Chris Alford. “Nerva and Dumbo” also features guest percussionist Mike Dillon on the tabla.
