Ryan Adams, Eric Krasno, Joe Russo, My Morning Jacket and Others React to the Grammys

As they normally do, the Grammys proved to be a disappointment. What should’ve been Kendrick Lamar’s big night turned into big wins for Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran, the performances were lackluster and poorly produced (except for a select few), and Paul McCartney couldn’t even get into the afterparty of his choice. Brutal.

As most know, the majority of the awards (or even close to it) aren’t handed out on the broadcast, so the recognition is normally taken to social media as those artists and their friends celebrate the win. There is also a fair amount of chatter from those on Twitter about the broadcast itself, including praise and a few critiques from the otherwise sloppy awards show. Let’s jump right into it.

Eric Krasno was pumped up for friends John Scofield and Snarky Puppy, who were two of the early winners in the day. Jon Cleary also picked up his first Grammy and former Lettuce member/roommate of Krasno, Jeff Bhasker would be involved in a few of the biggest awards of the night, taking home Producer of the Year and Record of the Year for “Uptown Funk.”

Jason Isbell also garnered some praise on Twitter after winning for
Something More Than Free. The record took home Best Americana Album and “24 Frames” won Best American Roots Song. Anthony Mason of CBS as well as collaborators Ryan Adams and Brian Fallon both tipped the cap to Isbell. Isbell’s wife, Amanda Shires, also posted a sweet picture of her celebrating the win.

Sometimes it’s not how you win, but how you lose, and My Morning Jacket lost with class last night as Bo Koster, Patrick Hallahan, Tom Blankenship and the band’s Twitter all nodded to Alabama Shakes, who won Best Alternative Album for
Sound and Color

As the broadcast got going, Danny Clinch was backstage shooting portraits of the winners. He kicked things off with this special collaboration between Dave Grohl, Trombone Shorty and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, who paraded through the crowd as the ceremony was getting ready to start.

The star of the night was Kendrick Lamar, who stunned with his performance of “The Blacker the Berry” and “Alright” complete with a new song sprinkled in at the end. Joe Russo, Chris Thile and Future Islands all summed it up perfectly. Kendrick was robbed and he proved it when he stepped on stage. Lamar’s epic
To Pimp a Butterfly did take home four awards, with the Compton rapper also winning for his collaboration with Taylor Swift.

Things took a softer turn following Lamar’s epic performance, and MMJ bassist Tom Blankenship was pleased, as it fit his wardrobe choice for the evening.

Adele’s awkward performance sparked some conversation between Trey Anastasio’s horn section, as Natalie Cressman, Jen Hartswick and James Casey debated just what went wrong before Adele set it straight later in the night.

The praise for Brittany Howard and the Alabama Shakes wasn’t quite done, as the band took home Best Rock Song for “Don’t Wanna Fight” and then hit the stage to prove it. NFL player Richie Incognito and Megafaun both chimed in about the greatness of the Shakes.

And finally, Ezra Koenig still hasn’t let that hurt go from that one time Alice Cooper said mean things about his band.

Oh, how could I forget. Lady Gaga, Nile Rodgers and others also did this incredible thing for David Bowie.
