Remembering LeRoi Moore: Watch the DMB Saxophonist Jam with Phish, John Mayer and Santana
Seven years ago today, the music world lost one of its finest talents as LeRoi Moore, founding member of Dave Matthews Band, passed away due to complications from an ATV accident suffered in June of 2008. In the days and weeks that followed his death, tributes poured in from the likes of Trey Anastasio, John Mayer, Kenny Chesney and nearly everyone who ever shared the stage with the inexplicably talented Moore.
DMB would continue touring, performing an emotional show at Staples Center that evening, which featured many of Moore’s staple tunes like “Bartender,” “Grey Street,” “The Dreaming Tree” and others. Taking the stage that night was heroic in its own right, as the band had every reason to take that night, and maybe the rest of the tour off. But they kept going and with the help of a new horn section featuring Jeff Coffin and Rashawn Ross, find themselves as dynamic as ever.
Over the years, Moore shared the stage with a wide variety of talented musicians and bands, often stealing the show with his sax. Watch below as he joins Phish, John Mayer and Santana in various settings for a pair of Marley covers and a Mayer original.
“Three Little Birds” w/Phish and Dave Matthews
“Gravity” w/John Mayer
“Exodus” w/Santana
“Theme From the Bottom” w/Phish
Below, read Trey Anastasio’s remembrance of Moore shortly following his death:
When Phish played Virginia Beach in 1997, LeRoi came on stage and started playing three saxophones at once and set off the most hilarious chain of events. Within minutes Page was playing four of his keyboards with his hands and feet and I had three guitars on and drumsticks in my hand banging on Fish’s drums. and Mike was playing two basses. It was just a phenomenal moment! And I remember LeRoi laughing with his mouth full of saxophones.
We miss you LeRoi and thank you for the joy you brought all of us.
-Trey Anastasio
