Pearl Jam Honor Lou Reed After His Passing with “I’m Waiting for My Man”
Two years ago today, Lou Reed passed away at the age of 71 from liver disease. In the days that followed, tributes poured in from the likes of Phish, who opened their show that evening with The Velvet Underground’s “Rock and Roll,” Arcade Fire worked in “Perfect Day” during their set at Capitol Records and also dedicated “Afterlife” to the late frontman. Neil Young also assembled a cast of musicians at his Bridge School for a take on “Oh! Sweet Nuthin'” and others.
Possibly one of the most personal tributes came from Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam, who debuted a cover of The Velvet Underground’s “I’m Waiting for My Man” in Baltimore that very evening. Vedder captured the essence of Reed in only the way he could, and the band would never play the song again. Also earlier in that show, the band worked in “Walk on the Wild Side” during “Daughter.”
