Jazz Fest Weekend One

Jeffrey Dupuis on May 5, 2011

The 2011 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival first weekend was a success. As always, many of the best surprises came not from the main stage, but by exploring many of the other stages. George Porter Jr. and Runnin Pardners kicked the Fest into high gear from the start. Highlights included a rollicking set from the Midnight Disturbers, a brass band powerhouse composed of Stanton Moore, Kevin O’Day, Matt Perine, Rodger Lewis, Skerik, Ben Ellman, Shamarr Allen, Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews, Mark Mullins, Big Sam Williams, and Corey Henry. This “only during Jazz Fest” collaboration has yet to disappoint. War Chief Juan Pardo brought Mardi Gras Indian music with his new group Jockimo’s Groove. Not to be outdone, Glen David Andrews delivered one of the most spirited sets of the day. Jazz Fest continues Thursday through Sunday.
