Jason Isbell Writes the Saddest Song Ever for Stephen Colbert

Rob Slater on March 8, 2016

Before Jason Isbell played a (real) sad song on Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he showed off some material from his forthcoming record, including the saddest song ever.  The obviously satirical tune plays on all of the country music cliches (Isbell describes himself as an alt-country troubadour) like your truck breaking down, etc. The result is, in fact, the saddest song ever complete with a horrific cannon accident.

The kicker? Isbell’s new tunes are available in triple-cassette format and TIDAL, “the two saddest music platforms known to man.”

Grammy winner Jason Isbell has written plenty of songs with dark themes, but until now, he had never written the saddest song ever.
