Happy Birthday Dave Matthews: Flash Back to 1994 with his Surprise Gig at a Memphis Blockbuster

January 9, 2019 marks Dave Matthews’ 52nd birthday.

It’s been a banner year for the musician and bandleader, who ushered Dave Matthews Band into a new era with keyboardist Buddy Strong and put out the band’s first album in six years, Come Tomorrow.

In celebration of Matthews’ birthday and delightfully spontaneous nature, we’re revisiting a 1994 surprise performance where he dropped in on an unsuspecting Blockbuster Video (Remember those?). Matthews serves up a six-song acoustic set including fan favorites like “The Best of What’s Around,” “Lie in Our Graves,” “Dancing Nancies” and “Satellite.”

Interestingly, a little more than a month after this video was shot, DMB’s seminal LP Under the Table and Dreaming was released, launching the band to massive success.
