Foundation of Funk in New Orleans (A Gallery)
Foundation of Funk—the project featuring the legendary rhythm section of The Meters, bassist George Porter Jr. and drummer Zigaboo Modeliste, along with a rotating guitarist and keyboardist—played New Orleans’ House of Blues on Saturday night during the first weekend of this year’s Jazz Fest, pairing the Meters duo with guitarist Eric Krasno and keyboardist John Medeski. The collective also welcomed Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, the Lettuce horn section of trumpeter Eric “Benny” Bloom and saxophonist Ryan Zoidis, and Grahame Lesh. The collaborative group ran through The Meters’ “Hey Pocky A-Way,” the NOLA standard “Iko Iko” and Bobby Bland’s classic “Turn On Your Lovelight.” Marc Millman shared some photos from the performance.
