John Fogerty: “Things Went Sorely Wrong” After the Grateful Dead’s Woodstock Set

October 20, 2015

John Fogerty visited Conan O’Brien to chat about his new autobiography Fortunate Son as well as a particularly humorous story about Creedence Clearwater Revival’s set at Woodstock.

“We were promised a primetime slot. What they didn’t tell me is you’re gonna follow the Grateful Dead,” Fogerty said. “Things went sorely wrong after they hit the stage,” adding that the Dead didn’t go on until midnight. “What they didn’t tell us until the 90s was they had all taken LSD just as they went on stage. About the middle of their set it went dead silent, I don’t really know what happened.”

“They had a great time,” Fogerty said with a laugh.

Bill Kreutzmann visited the same show and also discussed the appearance at Woodstock, saying it didn’t go well. “We had this thing about the big shows–blowing the big ones,” the drummer joked. Replay Fogerty’s interview below.

And then Fogerty hit an impromptu version of “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” with a crowd and host singalong.
