Celebrate 25 Years of Phish’s ‘Hoist’ with Mike Gordon’s Goofy ‘Tracking’ Documentary

On March 29, 1994, Phish released their fifth studio album, Hoist. Today, 25 years to the day after the record dropped, we’re celebrating by revisiting bassist Mike Gordon’s masterpiece documentary on the making of Hoist, Tracking.
Of course, in reality, Tracking is just a silly (and highly entertaining) collection of scenes Gordon filmed sporadically during the album’s creation, from footage of the band and their many guests on the tracks (like Béla Fleck, Alison Krauss, the Tower of Power horns, the Rickey Grundy Chorale and more) performing in the studio; behind-the-scenes snippets of video game and pinball machines; the band and crew reacting to the wildfires that threatened the California area where they were recording; Jon Fishman cracking up at a video of a polar bear; the album-cover photo shoot featuring a horse being hoisted up; and much more.
Watch Tracking in all its goofy ’90s glory below, and give Hoist another listen on its 25th birthday.
