Better Know Your Dead & Company Guitarist: Here’s John Mayer Covering a Bunch of Grateful Dead Songs

Rob Slater on August 5, 2015

In case you’re a late sleeper, John Mayer is teaming up with Weir, Kreutzmann and Hart as Dead & Company for a tour that’ll kick off on Halloween at Madison Square Garden. If you were still basking in the post-Fare Thee Well glow, it’s time to knock that off and get ready for more music from at least some of the Grateful Dead.

Much like Anastasio’s selection did, the announcement of Mayer has positively lit the internet on fire. Some say he simply isn’t schooled enough in the Dead’s music (wrong) and some seem worried that he’ll try to throw in a “Your Body is a Wonderland” at these shows (also probably wrong). Others defend Mayer, citing his background in the blues and pedigree as an accomplished guitarist.

While the internet banter is always fun, why don’t you judge for yourself and watch Mayer play a variety of Grateful Dead tunes including a full show with Phil Lesh & Friends at Terrapin Crossroads as well as performances with Bob Weir and select Dead covers he’s thrown into his own show.
