Sting, Bob Weir, John Legend, Mavis Staples, Robert Randolph Join The Roots at Climate Rally
Bob Weir and The Roots both made multiple appearances on Sunday during the Climate Rally on The National Mall. Weir was the first of the day’s major acts to perform, delivering solo takes on “When I Paint My Masterpiece” and “Throwing Stones.” Then Furthur’s John Kadlecik added fiddle and Tao Rodriguez-Seeger contributed banjo to “Ripple.” Weir also returned with Jimmy Cliff for “Save the Planet” and “Sitting in Limbo.” This set was preceded by three songs from Passion Pit, who had cancelled their Saturday night gig so that front man Michael Angelakos could rest his voice. a music from The Roots later brought Bobby back out for “Dancing in the Street” during a guest-laden set that also saw appearances by Booker T. Jones (“Green Onions”), Mavis Staples (“I’ll Take You There”), Joss Stone (“It’s A Man’s World”) and Robert Randolph (“Purple Haze”). John Legend then joined the Roots for a set that concluded with “Wake Up Everybody” before Sting and The Roots collaborated on the final performance of the day, which included versions of “Fragile,” “One World” and “Message in a Bottle.”
