Last night on The Late Late Show, temp host John Mayer welcomed out a personal hero as Bob Weir joined the fold for an interview and performance. The Grateful Dead guitarist sat down to discuss several topics, of course including the Fare Thee Well 50th anniversary shows this July 4th weekend in Chicago as well as the host’s fandom of the band. Mayer said he is a three-year convert of the Dead and got into their music while he dealt with his vocal chord troubles. “I couldn’t even speak at the time and the music just found me,” he said. Weir said the Fare Thee Well shows will be considered “The Dead,” saying that “when half of those guys are pushing up daises, you can’t call it [The Grateful Dead].” They also dished briefly on Jerry Garcia and how much fun Mayer would’ve had in an era without TMZ and the paparazzi.

Mayer also shared his own personal Grateful Dead mail-order envelope that he said he designed the previous night. “I put on a particularly tasty version of ‘Truckin’ and may have had a bit more fun than I’m telling you,” Mayer said. The two then hit the stage for a pair of performances including the aforementioned “Truckin'” and a finale of “Althea.”
